Meet Torstein, an Expedition Leader for HX

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

As Expedition Leader on board HX’s hybrid ship MS Fridtjof Nansen, Torstein Gaustad is the man who helps to make trips so special. With responsibility for both the onboard science and education programme as well as guiding activities off the ship, Torstein is there to ensure guests get the most from their expedition cruise with HX. We talk to him to find out more about this exciting role.

Is there such a thing as a typical day on an HX cruise?

“A big joy of this job is that no two days are the same! On a Greenland itinerary, we have some sea days, where we focus on the onboard programme, with lectures, science sessions, art workshops and information briefings about what's upcoming.

"On the days with either a community visit or exploration day, I start the morning with a coffee out on deck to enjoy the best office view in the world, while taking a moment to reflect on how amazing it is to be able to experience this. I then go to the bridge to talk to the captain and the officers, to get the latest update on timings, conditions and position and to see if the operational plan made earlier needs adjusting. Then we get ready to explore.”

What’s special about a Greenland cruise?

“The majestic landscapes. The mountains, fjords, glaciers and icebergs. Seeing and understanding how it was formed and still is forming and changing. The culture and people, too – the people of Greenland have a unique cultural identity and historical background. I love the welcoming community of Qaqortoq, where icebergs often flow by the entrance to the port. Guests can visit a family and join the traditional Kaffemik, or take a boat trip to see the historical Hvalsø Church ruins nearby.”

What are your Greenland cruise highlights?

“Learning from the Expedition Team! It’s amazing to see the majestic landscapes and wildlife, but even better when you learn about them. You start seeing in a new way when you also understand what you see. In the Expedition Team we have experts on wildlife, environment, history and culture – a well of information. There’s always more to learn and it gives me a lot of joy learning from our Expedition Team.”

Tell us more about the research onboard

“Our science team collects samples to assist research projects during the trip and guests can join in with science boat sessions, where they help collect samples and use the underwater drone when possible. Guests can also join in sessions onboard to gather data for citizen-science projects around the world, such as Happywhale and eBird.

"We also have guest scientists onboard, who join us to be able to conduct their research during the trip. They give presentations to guests and show results from their findings.”

What are your role’s highlights?

“My job is extremely exciting, interesting and rewarding. I enjoy working for a company that has such high standards for safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism. HX is leading the way in the expedition cruise industry with investment in hybrid-powered vessels and a focus on sustainability. I also appreciate the close collaboration of the local communities with our programme.

"One major highlight is the views, experiences and knowledge you acquire by working in the areas we sail, with the team we have. The logistical planning of our operations to make the perfect programme for all guests is also something I enjoy. Often on an expedition we need to change our plans, often at short notice, due to weather and ice conditions. The task of adjusting or completely changing the plan at a moment’s notice is challenging but very rewarding.

"And most of all, people! The ship team onboard and the collaboration between every department to create the best experience for our guests. Meeting guests from all around the world, and being part of giving them an unforgettable experience.”
