Rievaulx Abbey
SUITABLE FORAdults
Join Tony Powell, lecturer on English social history, who has researched and studied the Cistercian community of Rievaulx for the last 20 years, for a comprehensive walking tour of the Rievaulx Valley.
Take in the broader environs of the abbey and appreciate the size and complexity of the organisation needed when the abbey precincts were at their peak. The tour will give a glimpse of the sheer scale of the working abbey complex, including the locations of important areas such as the fishponds, stone quarries, freshwater springs and the original course of the River Rye, as well as the central abbey itself.
Light refreshments are included. This tour is graded as challenging access: it will last approximately two hours and will involve a lot of walking, including some steep hills and uneven surfaces.
