Defending Portsmouth

TIME

LOCATION

Fort Widley

SUITABLE FOR

SOLD OUT

Fort Widley was constructed in the 1860s as one in a chain of Victorian Forts defending the strategic ridge of Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth and its vital naval dockyard. Each of these five main Forts have construction variations, but Fort Widley is virtually identical to its neighbour, Fort Southwick.

Our tour will encompass the whole site, including underground tunnels, magazine chambers, outer fortifications, barrack blocks and inner defences. Learn about the history of the Fort, from its Victorian nickname of 'Palmerston's Folly' to its role as a First World War transit camp and then Cold War Civil Defence Control Centre. Fort Widley is maintained as a riding and equestrian centre and as such, public access to the historic fabric is not normally permitted, except by special arrangement.

This walk has been graded as moderate access as there will be plenty of walking. Please bring a torch and wear sturdy boots or shoes.
