Moons and Megaliths at the Stonehenge Planetarium

DATE

Sat 26 Oct - Sun 3 Nov 2024

TIME

10am - 4pm

LOCATION

Stonehenge

SUITABLE FOR

Everyone

Stonehenge is famous for its alignments with the sun, but did you know that the ancient monument may have also been carefully designed to align with the movements of the Moon?

Step inside our pop-up planetarium and embark on a journey through the solar system with our expert astronomer. Learn how to identify celestial objects such as stars, planets, and the Moon as we observe the night sky over the ancient stone circle.

2024 is a special year as an astronomical event called the Major Lunar Standstill approaches, a period when moonrise and moonset are furthest apart along the horizon. It is believed that at least one major standstill was marked during the early phase of Stonehenge.

The only way to book entry to the planetarium is when you arrive on site. Entrance to the planetarium is included in your admission ticket. Please sign up at the registration tent on arrival and ensure you are back at the tent 15 minutes ahead of the start time. There is limited availability for each session in the planetarium.

Also, on today from 10:00am – 4:00pm:
Visit the event area where you can walk around a foam replica of Stonehenge and learn about how the builders of Stonehenge may have observed and marked key moments such as solstices and lunar standstills.

While you’re visiting Stonehenge, pop in and see our special exhibition in the visitor centre which focuses on the ongoing research about the Moon’s influence on this iconic site and the people who built and used it.
