Things to See and Do

Things to see and do

There’s a great deal to explore on a day out at Witley Court. Below, we give you all the details of what to expect from a day out here, including the free audio tour, the highlights to look out for in the gardens, the woodland walks, the kids’ playground, and Witley Court’s shop.

Explore A Romantic Ruin

Walk up the sweeping driveway to the spectacular ruins of Witley Court and imagine a bygone era of decadent house parties, balls and concerts.

In the 1890s fashionable society flocked to Witley Court, including one frequent royal visitor, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.

Take in the impressive architecture and see the charred timbers from the disastrous fire which ripped through the court in 1937, destroying one of England's greatest country houses.

Take an audio tour behind the scenes

Pick up a free audio guide and bring Witley Court to life with stories of past residents

Re-live the extravagant lifestyle of the Foley and Dudley families who owned this classic example of a great Victorian country house.

Follow in the footsteps of the butler and other servants, and wander through the labyrinth of small rooms and passageways.

Enjoy Glorious Gardens

Wander through the intricately designed parterres, vibrant flower beds, ornate terraces and pavilions which make up the magnificently landscaped gardens of Witley Court.

Today, garden lovers can enjoy the beautifully restored East Parterre garden complete with topiary and colourful planting. There is something to enjoy in Witley’s gardens in every season

Don’t miss the spectacular Perseus and Andromeda fountain 'firing' as it comes to life – once said to sound like an express train.

Following a seven-month conservation project, the fountain has now been fully restored and fires every day from April to the end of October.

Play in the Wilderness Play Area

If your kids like to explore, they’ll love the wooden playground at Witley Court, inspired by the surrounding Wilderness Gardens. Can you keep your balance on the wobbly bridge and climb into to the seed pod-shaped treehouse beyond? There’s slides, rope walks, and a scramble net for climbers; dramatic kids can express themselves in the grass-covered amphitheatre; while noisy boys and girls will love the nature-inspired musical instruments.

Look out for the the nest-like basket swing and the wooden ride-on animals. The only limit to the space is your kids’ imaginations! The play area is located near the Visitor Centre and is designed to be enjoyed throughout the year.

Wander the Woodland Walks

Explore the winding woodland paths of Witley Court's vast parkland and wonder at the many different species of trees and shrubs from all over the world.

The rhododendron collection is particularly impressive.

Follow the path beside the lake and look out for the rustic Victorian boathouse. Pick up a free wildlife spotter sheet and look out for birds, squirrels and rabbits. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a great crested grebe – just one of the many beautiful birds which make up Witley's varied wildlife.

Great Witley Church

Extend your visit and wander over to see Great Witley Church. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels which is attached to Witley Court.

Untouched by the fire of 1937 this delightful church with its amazing Italianate Baroque interior, is a must-see for any visitor.

(Please note Great Witley Church is not managed by English Heritage)
