Thanks to the generous support of the public, English Heritage has raised more than £40,000 to help save the Iron Bridge.

The charity launched its first crowd-funding campaign, Project Iron Bridge, on 13 November and by 3.15pm on 20 November more than £40,000 had been raised.

Within 48 hours of launching the initial target of £25,000 had been exceeded. The goal was increased to £40,000 to support the final part of Project Iron Bridge - painting the 378-ton masterpiece.

The crowd-funding campaign complements a €1 million donation from the German Hermann Reemtsma Foundation and provides a much-needed boost to the project.

Support for Project Iron Bridge has been overwhelming with almost 800 people stepping in to help save this industrial landmark.

Morgan Cowles, Head of Conservation Maintenance at English Heritage, said:

'It has been an inspiring week, and the generosity of those who have come forward to help us protect this important piece of our heritage has been incredible. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated. As a new charity, we rely more than ever before on the support of our visitors, members and donors. 

'For those who still want to be part of the project, I am delighted to report that the Crowdfunder webpage will remain open for donations until Sunday 10 December. All donations beyond the target will continue to support the conservation of the Iron Bridge.'

WHY DO WE NEED TO SAVE THE IRON BRIDGE?

Built in 1779, the Iron Bridge was the first bridge made of iron and is considered a symbol of the Industrial Revolution.

However recent surveys and investigations have shown that it is under threat from cracking due to stresses in the ironwork. These structural damages date from the original construction, ground movement over the centuries and an earthquake at the end of the 19th century.

English Heritage's £3.6 million conservation project will include cleaning, conservation and vital repairs to the Iron Bridge.
