Facilities at Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard

  Parking

  Unfortunately there is no on site parking. However, there is a large Pay & Display car park at the end of Church Street and Walkergate, across the road from the Barracks. There is space for coaches/minibuses to drop off, although no designated space nearby for parking.

  Food And Drink

  Vending machine selling tea, coffee and hot chocolate, as well as a selection of cold drinks and ice creams. A number of cafes, pubs and restaurants can also be found in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is within walking distance of the site.

  Picnic Area

  You are welcome to bring a picnic to eat in the grounds. There are many benches set around the square in the centre of the Barracks, where you can sit and eat a picnic.

  Shop

  The shop sells a wide range of English Heritage souvenirs and gifts, including books, toys, games, military memorabilia, food, cold drinks and ice creams. The shop is located at the entrance to the Barracks. It can be accessed from both within and outside the site (payment is not required to access the shop). There are two small steps at the entrance of the shop.

  Dogs are welcome on leads both outside and inside the museums.

  Museum

  The site consists of three permanent museums: The King's Own Scottish Borderers' Regimental Museum; 'By Beat of Drum' Museum charting the history of infantrymen in the British Army, and The Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, which provides a history of the town and region. All museums are on multiple floors, with access provided by staircases - we regret that there is no designated disabled access to the upper floors. There are handrails on the stairs leading to the upper floors of the museums.

  Exhibition

  The site boasts a range of temporary and permanent exhibitions to explore, including 'By Beat of Drum', which gives you an insight into the life of the British infantryman, and 'The Story of a Border Garrison Town'. The Gymnasium Gallery also holds a variety of art exhibitions for short periods throughout the year.

  Gardens

  Although there are no gardens or grounds in particular at the Barracks, the Ramparts (owned by English Heritage) surrounding the town of Berwick provide a pleasant walk and offer views across the town and coastline.

  Push Chairs Allowed

  Push chairs are allowed on site, although the nature of the museum layouts make access difficult. Visitors are more than welcome to leave pushchairs in the shop.

  There are some boxes of children's activities in the Berwick Museum & Art Gallery.

  Family Learning

  There are no specific family-orientated activities, but the museums are accessible to children and are all enjoyed by families.

  Interpretation for Children

  Many of the interpretation panels in all three museums are child-friendly, although the Berwick Museum and Art Gallery includes some exhibits on the history of the region which are specifically aimed at children.
