    Free parking for about 50 vehicles on gravel surface. (Not managed by English Heritage.) Located 100 metres from site. Please be aware that the site can become very busy on summer weekends. Free entry for members of CADW and Historic Scotland (or 50% off in first year). Membership cards must be shown.

    This is a delightful place for a picnic, with many pleasant spots to sit on the grass amongst the ruins, overlooking the river or at one of our picnic tables.

    Gift shop is located within the reception area. This sells a selection of English Heritage souvenirs and gifts, including books.

  • Exhibition

    Features include a gatehouse bedecked with heraldry, including that of the De Roos family, Barons of Helmsley Castle; handsome monastic washbasins; and a small display of monastic artefacts.
  • Gardens

    The priory ruins are picturesquely set in the beautiful Derwent valley. This tranquil site has swathes of grass overlooking the River Derwent and lots of wild life. Steam train enthusiasts can listen to the York-Scarborough trains go they go by on the far side of the river during the summer. There is plenty of space for children to run around and explore. Games of hide and seek and frisbee are our specialities!
