Before You Go

Rotherwas was the family chapel of the Roman Catholic Bodenham family. The originally simple medieval building has a fine Elizabethan timber roof, a rebuilt 18th century tower, and striking Victorian interior decoration and furnishings by the Pugins.

Please note parking for this event is available at Hereford Archive and Record Centre which is approximately half a mile from the site. 

 

 

 

Before You Go

Opening Times: The exterior can be viewed during any reasonable daylight hours. The Chapel is located on a private lane so please access it via Bicycle or on foot. (See below for disabled parking information.)

To visit the interior of the chapel you'll need to collect the key from the Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre (HARC), Fir Tree Lane, Rotherwas, Hereford HR2 6LA. Contact them on 01432 260750.

The key is available 10am-4pm from Tuesday to Friday and the second Saturday in each month.

Outside of the above days the key may be available by arrangement from Sink Green Farm between 10am-6pm. Please call to check availability and arrange collection on 01432 870223. Sink Green Farm is located 1/2 mile to the east of the roundabout with chapel road along the B4399.

We may also be able to accommodate group visits with one of our knowledgable volunteers who can give you a tour of the chapel. Please call Barbara Ferris on 01432 870696 to arrange a suitable time and date.

Please note the lane and land around the chapel is privately owned so please access it either on foot or by bicycle. There is no access beyond the chapel to the river either to pedestrians or vehicles. Please do not block the lane as it is in constant use.

Parking: Parking is available at the HARC, from which the new Hereford Greenway provides a scenic walk to the chapel of approximately half a mile. The staff at HARC will be able to provide details of parking for those who have a disability and limited mobility. 

Facilities: HARC provides toilet facilities and light refreshments and nearby Hereford has facilities, shops and food outlets.

Please be aware: English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions. 

Plan a Great Day Out

Within a 30-minute drive is the charming church of St Mary's, Kempley, a 12th century parish church famous for its medieval wall paintings.

Goodrich Castle is also nearby. One of the finest and best preserved of all English medieval castles, it boasts a spectacular setting, extensive ruins and a café serving a variety of tempting treats.
