Before You Go

This 19th century cross of Saxon design marks what is traditionally thought to have been the site of St Augustine's landing on the shores of England in AD 597. Accompanied by 30 followers, Augustine is said to have held a mass here before moving on.

Plan a Great Day Out

Follow the coast south to Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre. The fort witnessed the beginning and almost the end of Roman rule in Britain, making it one of the most symbolically important Roman sites in the country.

Further along the coast visit the Tudor artillery forts of Deal Castle and Walmer Castle, part of a chain of coastal fortresses started by Henry VIII to combat the threat of Spanish invasion. Walmer has since been home to the Duke of Wellington and the Queen Mother and its battlements, private rooms and gardens are now being brought to life by a multimedia guide.
