Conservation work at Walmer Castle

English Heritage is preparing to undertake urgent repairs to Walmer Castle in order to conserve the building and its important historic collection for future generations.

The heavy rainfall throughout this year has taken its toll on the ageing and complex infrastructure of the building, causing it to spring several leaks. The team at Walmer worked quickly to protect the historic objects and organise temporary fixes. The next step is to bring in expert teams to pinpoint the exact source of the leaks and to draw up plans for conservation work to the roof, stone walls, gutters, and drainpipes.

After the assessment the scale, timing and estimated duration of the repair project will become clearer. But we estimate it is likely to be expensive and lengthy.

The Castle building will be closed to the public to during this assessment phase, which is expected to last until the new year. The gardens at Walmer are currently closed whilst the site hosts the Christmas at Walmer light trail event, which runs until January 1; after which they will re-open to the public.
