Go back in time and get up close to the action as rival knights compete in the ultimate test of strength and skill at the Kenilworth Castle Knights’ Tournament.

Four armoured knights and their squires will clash in a variety of gruelling rounds. You’ll be transported back to the 15th century as you experience the pageantry and action of the fearsome tournaments of days gone by.

Be entertained by Kenilworth’s Jester and enjoy traditional music as you explore. Young knights can test their skills at sword school.

Parking

Our free shuttle bus runs between the bus stop, next to the Holiday Inn Hotel (on Abbey End Road), and Kenilworth Castle Visitor Centre.

Timetable of events

  • See what's happening and plan your day
    • 10am: Kenilworth Castle and the Living History Encampment opens
    • 10.30am: Medieval Music - Join GreenMatthews for some toe-tapping tunes from the Middle Ages.
    • 11am: Knights Tournament: Accepting the Challenge and Archery - Choose your knight and cheer for your favourite as they accept the challenge and head straight into the first competition.
    • 11.30am: Jester Show - Boasting knives, fire, and a bed of nails, this dazzling display is not to be missed. But, danger enthusiasts beware: you just might end up becoming a part of the show yourself!
    • 12 noon: Dressing the Knight - Join the Earl Marshall and the knights at their tents and learn just what it takes to get dressed into a full harness of 15th Century armour.
    • 12.30pm: Ballads and Songs - Join our minstrels GreenMatthews as they regale you with musical tales of knights, dragons and outlaws.
    • 1pm: Knights Tournament: Sword Fighting - Watch and cheer for your favourite knight as they go into one-on-one combat using some of the finest of swords and weapons from the Armoury.
    • 1.30pm: Jester Show - Boasting knives, fire, and a bed of nails, this dazzling display is not to be missed. But, danger enthusiasts beware: you just might end up becoming a part of the show yourself!
    • 2pm: Meet the Knights - Join the knights at our pop-up shop where you can have a picture, or get your flags signed before the knights take to the field.
    • 2.30pm: Knights Tournament: Battle of Barriers and Crest Melee - A barrier between them and Pole Hammers in their hands, raise your voice for your champion and spur them on as they fight in the hardest hitting event of the day! Followed by a competition of skill and speed to take the crest from their enemy’s helmets without losing their own.
    • 3pm: Meet the Instruments with GreenMatthews - A chance to listen to, and learn about, the weird and wonderful musical instruments of the Middle Ages.
    • 3.30pm: Jester Show - Boasting knives, fire, and a bed of nails, this dazzling display is not to be missed. But, danger enthusiasts beware: you just might end up becoming a part of the show yourself!
    • 4pm: Knights Tournament - Who will be victorious? The Grand Melee will decide! A full tournament field with every knight and squire heading in to face each other at the same time! Only one knight can win so shout, scream, boo and cheer for your favourite knight and see who will be crowned champion!
    • 4.30pm: Medieval Music - A last chance to join GreenMatthews for some more toe-tapping tunes from the Middle Ages.
    • 4.30 - 5pm: Last chance to visit the encampment, explore the castle and meet characters from the past!

    Please note:

    • If using the shuttle bus service – the last bus will leave Kenilworth Castle Visitor Centre at approximately 5:30pm.
    • Times above are approximate and some activities are weather permitting.
    • When visiting displays, please do not touch anything unless invited to do so by performers.
    • Please do not cross any tape barriers unless invited to do so by the performers.

British Sign Language

On Monday 31 August we will have a British Sign Language Interpreter on site all day.

There will be a meet and greet at the Visitor Centre at 10 - 10.45am. They will then be in the BSL Zone to interpret the main events.

At 3pm our Deaf Guide will deliver a History Highlights Tour of Kenilworth Castle. His BSL tour will also be voiced by an interpreter and anyone is welcome to join. Please meet at the Visitor Centre.
