On the shores of Lake Windermere, the well-marked remains of Ambleside Roman Fort date from the 2nd century. It was built under Hadrian’s rule to guard the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and to act as a supply base.

Plan a Great Day Out
Follow in the footsteps of the Romans by visiting two other Roman sites in the area, once linked to Ambleside by a Roman road. From the remains of the bath house at Ravenglass, the road went east to Hardknott Roman Fort, and from there it descended to the shores of Lake Windermere, and to Ambleside Roman Fort.
At the other end of Lake Windermere you'll find the award-winning Stott Park Bobbin Mill. From Ambleside it's a thirty minute drive or it can be reached by taking a lake cruise, followed by a 15 minute walk.
