St John Street Trellis
Thought to be dated between 1760 and 1820 this wallpaper fragment was found at No.80 St John Street - a very ancient and important route from the City of London towards Islington and to the North of England. Designers Guild created new original artwork which was hand stamped to retain the spirit of the original.

This handsome surface printed geometric wallpaper has been faithfully re-produced from the original which was likely to have been created using the more labour intensive method of hand block printing wallpapers pre 1839.

Fragments of the original block printed wallpaper had been overlaid with decoupage flowers which the team at Designers Guild retained when re-working the design. This additional layer created another dimension to the pattern of the original wallpaper which was found in Eagle House - a Jacobean manor in the Wimbledon area of London.

The fragment of wallpaper which formed the inspiration for this design was found at No.37 Craven Street in central London built around 1731. Designers Guild created new original artwork which was hand painted to retain as much of the spirit of the original.

Removed from No. 29 Sackville Street in 1990, the original wallpaper fragment has an almost Jacobean feel with bold statement colour in the block printed floral motifs possibly dating around 1730. The designs have been reworked completely by re-painting with a softer form and scale.

The ‘Hoho’ bird depicted in the original the archival fragment derives from the mythical East-Asian version of the Phoenix. The design commissioned by Designers Guild by an artist specialising in traditional chinoiserie style work for interior textiles to retain as much of the character of the original fragment.
