Edlingham Castle Collection Highlights

Most of the objects in English Heritage’s collection for Edlingham were found during major excavations between 1978 and 1982. The tower, hall house and court to the north were examined as well as areas of the ditch and gatehouse.

Although the castle was probably occupied from the 13th century, the items found mostly date from the later refurbishment and occupation of the site by the Swinburne family, who bought the castle in 1514. The collection provides a fascinating insight into the castle’s use as a post-medieval country house, revealing hidden details of lost interiors (including an elaborate plaster ceiling), evidence of metalworking and agriculture on the estate, and objects of personal adornment.
