Facilities at Landguard Fort

  • Parking

    V

    Three designated spaces in small car park directly in front of fort for blue badge holders only.

    Public pay-and-display car parking, not managed by English Heritage, can be found opposite the fort (across the road, approximately 50 metres away).

  • Food And Drink

    V

    Our 1940s-themed tearoom serves light refreshments, including hot and cold drinks, chocolate bars, crisps, sweets and ice creams. 

    The Landguard Visitor Centre, which is approximately 100 metres from the fort, houses the View Point Café. This serves meals, cakes, ice-cream, and hot and cold drinks.

  • Picnic Area

    There are benches and picnic tables located around the fort and two grass areas in the outer parade that may be used for picnics.
  • Shop

    The shop sells a wide range of Landguard Fort souvenirs and gifts.

  • Toilets

    V

    Toilet facilities are limited, but unisex portable units are provided (including a disabled unit) for visitors. Full public toilet facilities, including disabled toilets and baby changing facilities, are available at the Landguard Visitor Centre which is approximately 100 metres from the fort.

  • Dogs

    V

    Assistance dogs on leads are welcome.

    Other dogs are welcome on leads except in the gift shop and the tearoom.

    A water bowl is available for dogs.

  • Museum

    V

    Visitors will find Felixstowe Museum located next door to the fort (separate site).

  • Exhibition

    V
    A small permanent exhibition is located in the ground floor of the fort. Temporary exhibitions are sometimes held in the first floor rooms, which are accessible only by stairs.
  • Gardens

    V

    The site is situated on the Landguard peninsula, sitting between the Port of Felixstowe and a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) Nature Reserve which has a rare vegetated shingle ecosystem. It is bordered by the North Sea and the Orwell estuary. Fantastic views of the estuary, ships, port operations and the sea are available from the fort and surrounding area. There are paths though the Nature Reserve including an easily accessible boardwalk. Wildlife can be spotted on the Nature Reserve.

    A cycle route runs from the town of Felixstowe through the Nature Reserve to the fort.

  • Audio Tours

    There is a free audio-visual app to guide you around the fort using a smartphone or tablet, downloadable via a QR code during your visit or click here to download it in advance. The app stays on your device until you uninstall it so you can rewatch after your visit.

    A free standard audio tour is also available. 

  • Family Friendly

    Play Areas / Adventure Playground

    Although there is not an adventure playground, there is plenty of space to run and play on the nature reserve and lots to explore in the fort. Please note that kites are not permitted on the reserve.

    Pathways and surfaces within the fort include gravel, grass, concrete and asphalt which may be slippery when wet.

    Private/corporate functions are possible although facilities at the fort are limited. Please call the site for further information.
  • Commercial Photograph And Filming

    English Heritage welcomes all photographers to our sites and we hope you will share your pictures with us on Flickr and Facebook. We do have some restrictions at certain locations, so if photography is your main reason for visiting, please call the site ahead of your visit to check if any parts of the site are restricted. We are keen to promote the use of our sites to location managers. If you are interested please go to (Filming Locations) for more information and contacts. English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
