Our award-winning, expert-led Discovery Visits are interactive, hands-on and immersive. Best of all, we lead them for you. At just £100 per session per class at selected sites, these visits are delivered by our site staff and volunteers with knowledge and expertise across the curriculum, and have been specifically designed to meet the needs of different groups across the key stages.

Please book your visit online at least 14 days in advance. Have a look at our school visit site pages for full details on available facilities, workshops, free downloadable risk assessments and resources to support your trip planning. You can also find up to date guidance on our what to expect page.

What are discovery visits?

Expert-led Discovery Visits are a great way to further examine a topic and site in greater detail. Managed by our site experts and tailored to align with the curriculum, learners can dress up, have a go at role play, crack some codes, or even become Royal servants.

Our sessions have been designed to help create unique and memorable learning experiences to help you bring the topic to life. Sessions last for about an hour and are typically accommodate 30 children.  Search the list of places that offer Discovery Visits and enhance your trip.

Join English Heritage on The Great British School Trip!

We are proud to be working with Hyundai to support The Great British School Trip. The programme has now helped over 90,000 young people with funding for their school trips, and will be continuing to support trips to our sites for the next academic year.

Choose the English Heritage site you'd like to visit, then apply for a bursary for travel costs, or to cover the cost of a Discovery Visit workshop.

Free planning visits

Once your booking is confirmed, we recommend a free planning visit to help you prepare for your trip and familiarise yourself with the site. Whether you have an existing visit booked with us or are making a new booking, you’ll need to book your free planning visit in advance. Simply go to the webpage of the site you want to visit, and in the book tickets section select from the ‘Associated Organisations’ tab ticket options.

You won’t be able to get in to our sites unless you have pre-booked your free planning visit tickets and have your education booking permit with you to show a member of staff on entry.

Your permit also gives you a 20% discount on the official English Heritage guidebook for your place of choice.
