Gainsthorpe is one of the best-preserved deserted medieval villages in England, with many of its houses, barns and streets clearly visible as a complex of grassy humps and bumps. According to legend, it was a den of thieves demolished by unhappy locals, but the real reason for its abandonment remains uncertain.

Before You Go
Parking: A small corner of the farmer's field is set aside for free parking, although it isn't available when in use by the farmer - mainly during harvest time. The parking area is signposted.
How to Find it: The site is off Gainsthorpe Road East, just off the A15
Facilities: There are public toilets and places to eat and drink in nearby Kirton in Lindsey.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome.

Two fascinating historic sites are within a half hour's drive of Gainsthorpe. To the north, Thornton Abbey, with its enormous gatehouse, is well worth a visit. Heading south, Gainsborough Old Hall is one of the biggest and best-preserved medieval manor houses in England. Explore its impressive interiors, take the multimedia tour and visit the café for refreshments.
