You can book online until 8.45am on the day of your visit. You can still buy a ticket when you arrive, but you won’t get the discount.

Tickets are valid all day, so you can arrive at any time and stay for as long as you like within our opening hours.

Tickets are free for members. You can still book online if you’d like – just remember to bring your English Heritage membership card.

Access to main parts of the Castle and main Ward over mown grass; some gravel around base of keep. Access to Keep and Cockpit by original steps only.

Entrance / Set Down

Walk from market place to site is over cobbles there is some disabled parking in the market place (2 hours free) or all day (Nuns Close pay-and-display).

Rough grass, low ruined walls in places, and rabbit holes. Uneven historic stairs.

Large drop overlooking river (clearly sign posted).

Cobbles can be slippery due to moss, especially when wet.

There are a few slopes around the edges of the site.

Steep Stairs

One steep spiral staircase in Keep. Can be avoided by going up the Gatehouse first.

Beware Of Traffic

Cars and work vans on site, but these are not allowed on main site whilst it is open to visitors.

Uneven Ground

Cobbled surface in the garden. Low ruined walls in places.
