Medieval Tintagel Reconstructed

The remains visible at Tintagel today belong to a 13th-century castle built for the hugely rich and ambitious Richard, Earl of Cornwall, brother of King Henry III. Although his castle soon fell into disrepair, its links with Arthurian legend ensured that it remained a source of interest.

The reconstruction drawing below shows how Earl Richard’s castle may have looked in about 1240. Use the image windows to find out more about each feature.
