Ancient techniques, modern designs: creating two new models of Warkworth

As part of a programme to enhance the on-site experience at Warkworth, we recently installed two large-scale models of the castle for visitors to enjoy on their next visit. These models give people an opportunity to see how we believe this medieval castle and chief holding of the aristocratic Percy family would have looked in its heyday. Learn how we uncovered the castle’s past and watch the video below to see how we created new models to help visitors understand this medieval site.

Properties historian Dr Will Wyeth researched the castle complex extensively, with the aim to create a harmonious impression of this space which could be built as a sandstone model. This was particularly challenging because we do not have any evidence from archeology or written sources. He therefore relied on studying the existing ruined buildings, looking at other castles from the same historical period and using existing 3D models of the castle complex and Great Tower.

The result of this research is an impressive sandstone model of the complex, built using an intriguing combination of ancient stonemasonry techniques and modern 3D printing. Additionally, we’ve installed a cast iron model of the Great Tower, for visitors who cannot gain access via the steps. Lain on its side, it enables all visitors to see a doll’s house view of the inside of the impressive tower space. Watch the video below to discover how we designed and built these large-scale models.
