UNLIMITED ACCESS TO OVER 400 HISTORIC PLACES
Live and breathe the story of England at royal castles, historic gardens, forts & defences, world-famous prehistoric sites and many others.
The site does not have a car park although ample parking is available at the visitor centre, which is located 5 minutes’ walk away. A road must be crossed to access the site. Payment by phone or coin only. This charge cannot be refunded as the car park is operated by the local council. Charged parking is also available on the roads leading out of the village.
There is one unisex toilet / disabled toilet (including baby changing facilities) located in the visitor centre. Visitors should be aware that once they have climbed up to the castle site there will be no toilet facilities available for them to use.
Dogs are welcome on the site, but we do ask that they are kept on a lead.

English Heritage welcomes amateur photographers to our sites and we hope you will share your pictures of your visit with us on social media.
If you are looking to use one of our sites for commercial, corporate or professional photography or as a filming location, please contact our filming team as soon as possible to check availability and acquire the relevant permissions and paperwork.
Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
Please note: A handrail covers part of the slope leading up to the castle, although the majority of the walk does not have one.
Sheep graze on the site in summer months, although they do not venture into the castle itself.
