Before you go

Access by guided tour only - there are strict security requirements in place as the site is an operational military establishment. Please read the following information fully before booking a tour.

Join a Guide on this walking tour of the Royal Citadel, and learn about the 350 years plus of the stories the fortress has to offer. Commanding a prominent position on Plymouth Hoe, looking out over the Sound and into the Channel and Western Approaches, it has seen the unfolding of so many events in the nation's history.

Access via guided tour only, led by Armada Tours, bookable up to 24 hours in advance through www.eventbrite.co.uk. As the site is an operational military establishment there are strict security requirements in place and tours may be suspended or cancelled without notice.

Tours are available every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday (current restrictions permitting) starting from 2nd April 2024 until the end of October. Please arrive at 14.00 in order to complete security checks. If you arrive after 14.00 it will not be possible for you to join the tour. Meet at the Commando Memorial on Lambhay Hill to the north of the Citadel.

Tickets must be purchased or booked online at www.eventbrite.co.uk at least 24 hours in advance (tickets can no longer be issued on the day). Please print your ticket and bring it with you. There is no parking on site and no toilet facilities. For security reasons you will not be able to leave the tour once it has begun; for this reason we cannot accommodate children under the age of 7 years.

All Visitors are required to produce valid Photo ID (Passport or Driver’s Licence) which must match the name on the ticket. All bags will be subject to search and in most cases there will be a handheld metal detector body search. Large bags are not permitted. Please allow a minimum of 2 hours for the tour including these entry requirements.

Please be aware, due to the current Security Regulations on the Military Base, no photography is permitted and all recording devices are prohibited, including mobile phones, tablets and cameras, so we suggest that you do not bring these with you. Any such items will be held securely by regiment staff for the duration of the tour. No dogs, large bags and no liquids over 100ml or unsealed liquids of any size are permitted on site.

COVID Measures: Please do not attend the tour if you have any symptoms of Covid 19. All social distancing guidance should be adhered to and you will be asked to keep 2 meters apart from other members of the tour group. Please be aware that this is an outdoor tour and so face coverings are not mandatory.

Tours are operated by Armada Tours, for further information please contact armadatours.royalcitadel@gmail.com.

Please be aware parking can be very limited around the Citadel, especially during weekends and holidays - please give yourself ample time to find a parking space or consider public transport. The Citadel is approximately 25 minutes walk from the train station.
