English Heritage’s unmissable Roman forts along Hadrian’s Wall

  • HOUSESTEADS ROMAN FORT, NORTHUMBERLAND

Located high on an escarpment, Housesteads is Britain’s most complete Roman fort. Take a tour to discover the ruins of the barracks and a hospital, soak up the panoramic views, then head into the museum to learn more and to see objects excavated here.

  • CHESTERS ROMAN FORT AND MUSEUM, NORTHUMBERLAND

A garrison of 500 cavalry troops was stationed at this remote outpost for about 300 years. Today, you can see the ruins of the fort’s gates, headquarters and commanding officer’s house. Families can also pick up a takeover trail sheet.

  • BIRDOSWALD ROMAN FORT, CUMBRIA

Located along the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian’s Wall, Birdoswald was home to successive garrisons of Romans. After exploring the ruins of the fort, head through the replica gatehouse to get hands-on with Roman history before refuelling in the café.
