UNLIMITED ACCESS TO OVER 400 HISTORIC PLACES

The on site shop serves tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Cold drinks and various snacks are also available. Ice-cream is sold in the summer.
A unisex accessible toilet is available. Additional hand sanitising stations are available at site.
Dogs on leads allowed (in restricted areas). Assistance dogs welcome.
A good collection of general militaria on display within the Officers Quarters on the first floor. There is a narrow staircase up to the first floor.
The 'Defending the River Exhibition' is located in the East Gunpowder Magazine. This looks at the history of Thames defences from pre-Tudor times to WW2.
There are numerous grassed areas and embankments/earthworks located in the grounds with picnic tables and benches.
Outside the fort walls are extensive moats, marshes and earthworks which form part of the original defences. These are a haven for wildlife including swans, cormorants, ducks, coots, moorhens, Canada geese, herons, kingfishers, amphibians, and various fish.
Children are encouraged to play with the guns on the gun lines many of which can be rotated and adjusted. Grass areas and banks are also very popular with families.
There is some uneven ground due to age of site and cobbled parade ground. Warning signs located at the entrance.

Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
