Facilities at Tilbury Fort

  • Parking

    Free parking in front of fort. Further parking available adjacent to World's End Public House.
  • Food And Drink

    The on site shop serves tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Cold drinks and various snacks are also available. Ice-cream is sold in the summer.

  • Picnic Area

    You are welcome to enjoy a picnic in the grounds and on the grassed areas. Picnic tables are dotted around the site including on the edge of parade ground where there is one table specially designed for wheelchair access.
  • Shop

    Gift shop is located within the Guard House. This sells a wide range of English Heritage souvenirs and gifts, including books, snacks, hot and cold drinks.
  • Toilets

    A unisex accessible toilet is available. Additional hand sanitising stations are available at site.

  • Dogs

    Dogs on leads allowed (in restricted areas). Assistance dogs welcome.

  • Museum

    A good collection of general militaria on display within the Officers Quarters on the first floor. There is a narrow staircase up to the first floor.

  • Exhibition

    The 'Defending the River Exhibition' is located in the East Gunpowder Magazine. This looks at the history of Thames defences from pre-Tudor times to WW2.

  • Gardens

    There are numerous grassed areas and embankments/earthworks located in the grounds with picnic tables and benches.

    Outside the fort walls are extensive moats, marshes and earthworks which form part of the original defences. These are a haven for wildlife including swans, cormorants, ducks, coots, moorhens, Canada geese, herons, kingfishers, amphibians, and various fish.

  • Audio Tours

    The audio tour includes Elizabeth I’s Armada speech, and a description of life at Tilbury by ‘Nathan Makepiece’, the fort’s Master Gunner. Our interactive oral history programme provides a fascinating insight into Tilbury, and also includes 360 degree views of inaccessible areas.

    If you are looking to use one of our sites for commercial, corporate or professional photography or as a filming location, please contact our filming team as soon as possible to check availability and acquire the relevant permissions and paperwork.

    Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
