Facilities at Housesteads Roman Fort

  • Parking

    The car park at Housesteads Roman Fort is operated by Northumberland National Park. To support their endeavours in protecting our National Park, there is a charge to park in this car park.Up to three hours of parking costs £3.00 and every additional hour thereafter costs £2.00 per hour. The parking fee is payable on exit or you can pay up to 48 hours after leaving the car park, online at www.parkwithease.co.uk. Accessible parking is available in the main car park and there are limited spaces at the museum by the fort. The fort and museum are a 750 metre walk uphill from the main car park and National Trust visitor centre. Please note the path has a rough surface.

    Please ask at the visitor centre for directions to the museum car park. Blue badge holders are required to pay the parking fee, as are all cars, vans, motorbikes, coaches, electric vehicles, motor homes, and English Heritage members. Please call the Northumberland National Park Authority on 01434 605555 for any enquiries regarding the car park.

    You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the site. We provide picnic blankets for you to use during the summer.

    The gift shop is attached to the museum and is step. The shop sells Roman themed souvenirs, snacks, hot and cold drinks.

    Male and female, including accessible toilets and baby changing in the National Trust toilets. There are also portable toilets available at the museum.

    Dogs are welcome on the fort, on a short lead. Assistance dogs welcome.

    A fascinating collection of Roman finds can be seen at Housesteads, some returning to the fort for the first time in hundreds of years. See Roman altars, dedication stones, jewellery, tools and weapons, which all give us a snapshot of life 2,000 years ago. Please note the museum is step free.

  • Exhibition

    Explore the story of the fort through dramatic film footage of the stunning World Heritage Site and CGI recreations of the original Roman buildings. See what it was really like to live on this hilltop fortress of Vercovicium, the Roman name for Housesteads which means 'place of the effective fighters'.

    Younger visitors can meet 'Felix', a character of the fort who will guide them around the museum.

    Due to the delicate nature of our sites, English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.
