From sprawling Iron Age forts to tiny medieval chapels, our free-to-enter sites are irreplaceable. They’re a part of our communities, and of our nation. They belong to each and every one of us – and they belong to you.
But sadly, they face many threats - from the destructive impacts of climate change and rising costs to damage caused by constant wear and tear.

Stones made safe at Baconsthorpe Castle, Norfolk
Extensive repairs have stabilised the picturesque ruins of this 15th century manor house, home for over 200 years to prominent Norfolk family, the Heydons. The modern timber bridge over the moat has been repaired, while loose flints and brickwork have been secured in the inner and outer gatehouse and north-east tower.

Seeing miracles at Chester Castle, Cheshire
Rare paintings on the chapel walls of Chester’s 13th century Agricola Tower have been digitally reimagined to show how they might have looked when freshly painted more than 700 years ago.

New life blooms at Thornborough Henges, North Yorkshire
Community days with locals and volunteers have involved hedge-laying and reintroducing native wildflower species to the central henge, one of three huge Neolithic earthworks by the river Ure. The flowers will help increase biodiversity, enrich the soil and protect the henges from erosion.
