Equity, diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
Why is it important to us?
Our vision is that, by 2040, English Heritage will have helped millions of people to come closer together through their shared enjoyment and love for England’s heritage. We can only do that by becoming a truly equitable, diverse and inclusive organisation. It’s our responsibility to encourage everyone to enjoy and value heritage in all its forms. We do that because we know that connecting with heritage leads to better health, social and economic outcomes for individuals, communities and the nation.
Our EDI strategy: 'inclusion in action'
Since we launched our first EDI strategy in 2021, we’ve redoubled our work to uncover untold stories. We’ve created a dedicated EDI team to introduce inclusive recruitment to widen our pool of talent, rolled out a variety of learnings on inclusion and set up EDI Networks to listen to and represent diverse voices.
We’ve achieved a lot since 2021, but there’s still so much more to do. We need to continue to focus on broadening our appeal. We need to make sure we’re taking intentional, purposeful action that really matters to our people, our audience and local communities. Our refreshed EDI Strategy, ‘Inclusion in Action’ sets out what we aim to do and how we plan to get there.

You’ll find it’s a workplace like no other – taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.
From day one, we’ll help you connect to others through our EDI networks. These include Ethnic Diversity, LGBTQ+, Gender Specific Issues, Faith and Belief, Age, Disability, Social Equity and Neurodivergence.
Partner organisations
We also partner with other organisations to not only show our commitment to EDI, but also to help us to keep improving in our efforts:
- We are part of the Disability Confident Scheme and are proud to support its aims.
- We are members of the Stonewall Champions Programme which enables us to continue to have a workplace where all LGBTQ+ employees are welcomed without exception.
- We are members of the Business Disability Forum which enables us to work towards removing more barriers to inclusion for Disabled colleagues
- We are committed to playing our part in support of race equity through our Business in the Community membership
Our recruitment process
Throughout the recruitment process we will ensure your experience is equitable and fair. We do this by ensuring that:
- No applicant receives less favourable treatment because of age, disability, gender re-assignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, or pregnancy and maternity.
- No applicant is disadvantaged by conditions or requirements, which cannot be justified by the requirements of the job.
- Our zero tolerance policy on all forms of modern slavery and coerced labour of human trafficking is applied. Please read our Modern Slavery Transparency Statement for more information.
- During our application process candidates are asked whether they wish to apply for their role through the Disability Confidence scheme. Under this scheme, if you meet the minimum essential criteria you will be offered an interview. Where we have a high volume of Disability Confidence scheme applicants, we will offer an interview to those that best meet the minimum criteria for the job.
