Before You Go

Not far east of Chesters Roman Fort in Northumberland is a 15 metre-long stretch of Hadrian's Wall at Planetrees. This length of wall is important for what it reveals about a change of plan that took place during the construction of the Wall, when its width was narrowed from 10 to 8 Roman feet - probably to speed up building. At Planetrees, clearly the soldiers laying the Wall's foundations had worked faster than the builders of the superstructure, because the narrower Wall sits on top of broader foundations.

Plan a Great Day Out

Planetrees Roman Wall is the most easterly part of the Chesters Roman Trail. This is an invigorating walk, encompassing a bath house, a fort and a temple.  If the whole trail is too daunting, why not pick a shorter section?  But don't miss the bath house remains at Chesters Roman Fort. As well as these impressive ruins, you can also find a museum, Chesters Tearoom, toilet facilities, a picnic area and a gift shop.
