Dartmouth Castle
SUITABLE FORAdults
Join our Senior Historian Paul Pattison for a morning walk along the Dart between two of its historic fortifications. Paul will guide you through the 600-year history of Dartmouth Castle and its significance in protecting the river entrance in wartime and against pirates and privateers.
A gentle walk upstream, through Warfleet, will bring you to the quay at Bayard's Cove. There you will discover the story of the Tudor fort built by the town authorities to deter anyone who might try to disrupt its prosperous trade.
We will start our tour at Dartmouth Castle before making our way back along the estuary and finishing at Bayard’s Cove. The walk from Dartmouth Castle to Bayard’s Cove is approximately 20 minutes. Please note that Dartmouth Castle features many steep steps, staircases and narrow corridors throughout the site. For this reason, this event is graded as challenging access. There will also be limited places to rest on the tour, which covers uneven terrain.
