Watch our Members' lectures

Don’t miss fascinating lectures from our expert historians – all broadcast to your home and completely free. On 30 January Dr Dominique Bouchard will examine the hugely important (but little known) legal case of Somerset v Stewart which was instrumental in the eventual abolition of slavery. Then on 27 February Bethan Stanley will be going ‘behind the glitter’ to give us the story of J.W. Evans Silver Factory in Birmingham. Finally, on 26 March we’ll head underground with Kevin Booth to explore the York Cold War Bunker and its role in the Cold War.

Grime’s Graves – reopening spring 2024

Image: child climbing the ladder at Grime's Graves

A major project at this fascinating site will make it accessible to even more people. A Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Norfolk countryside, Grime’s Graves’ undulating lunar landscape contains over 400 shafts, quarries and spoil dumps of a prehistoric flint mine. A new visitor centre exhibition brings to life the stories of those who worked here, while interactive virtual tours will help visitors explore the mines from the surface.

Grime’s Graves is currently closed while the project is finished, and will reopen in Spring 2024.

Have a car free day out

Image: visitors on bus

Did you know, you don’t actually need a car to enjoy a great day out in history? Many of our historic places can be visited by public transport, by bike, on foot – or a mixture. For example, you can use the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall Country Bus to explore the world-famous, ancient northern frontier of the Roman empire. In the South East, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Kent seafront between Deal and Walmer castles. Pendennis Castle in Cornwall, meanwhile, is a short (albeit slightly uphill walk) from Falmouth Docks station, while St Mawes castle is a ferry-ride across the strategically important Fal estuary.

Revisit Dover Castle

Image: family walking in front of Dover Castle

Autumn 2024 will see an exciting new project finalised at Dover Castle. Brand new exhibitions and play areas will tell the story of the siege of 1216. Napoleonic casements will be transformed into an interactive space, introducing characters from the siege. The medieval tunnels will be reinterpreted and a revised route introduced, delivering visitors to a brand new-breathtaking viewing point where you can enjoy the full majesty of Dover Castle as never seen before.

With its Great Tower and wartime tunnels, Dover Castle is always worth a visit – but with the new additions this iconic fortress will become even more unmissable.
